Sporadic error starting virtual Machine on Windows Host (x64) (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE)

since the beginning of this year i get problems starting VMs through the Oracle VM Virtual Manager. Sometimes i have to repeat clicking "start" 5 times or more. I'm running Version 4.1.4-74291 on my Windows 7 Host (64bit). The errors displayed differ each time.

The last error i had was:

General failure - DON'T USE THIS!!!. (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE).

Please reopen if still relevant with VBox 4.1.22.

I have the same problem with 4.2.

In fact, I have had this exact problem for years. When starting a VM under Windows 7 x64 host on a Acer laptop, I often have to start it up to 5 or more times, each time getting this error, until it starts correctly. Once it has started successfully, it doesn't generally happen again during my Windows session for this VM but can occur for other VMs.

Failing VMs are all Windows versions (e.g. XP, Vista, 7 and now 8 - a mixture of 32 & 64 bit VMs). It rarely, if ever, occurs for my Ubuntu VM. I don't think it has ever happened if a Windows VM reboots.

Error message (different IConsole UUID to the one reported before):

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 8 EE.

General failure - DON'T USE THIS!!!. (VERR_GENERAL_FAILURE).

Still here in 4.2.8. Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Host and Windows 7 Professional 64-bit Guest.

Start the guest first time get this error:

On trying again, guest started OK.

Same issue with 4.2.14, Win 8 Pro 64-bit host and XP SP3 Guest.

Permanent crashes. Switching seamless mode to off fixed it for me.

I have upgraded to 4.2.18 recently and now I can't run all my Ubuntu 64bit images which were perfectly ran by previous version due to this error. Host system is Windows 7 64bit.

I had the same problem and the antivirus was the root cause, I disabled the USB controller in the Virtual box and everything works!
