GUI and phpvirtualbox crash when using ISCSI disk

When adding a iscsi device to a VM like
--- snip --- VBoxManage storageattach testVM --storagectl "SATA" --port 1 --device 0 --type hdd --medium iscsi --server 127.0.0.1 --target iqn.2014-07.com.test:vmtest1.disk --lun 1 --username "vmtest1" --password "test" --initiator iqn.2014-07.com.test:vmtest1.serve --- snap ---
the GUI hangs up or vboxwebservice hangs. No input is available. The VM status is not viewable anymor. This happens similar if the iscsi target exists or not. It is reproducible on any platform.
Deleting the VM folder from "Virtualbox VMs" solves the hangup and the GUI is usable.
