USB audio device stops recordings after a few minutes in guest

I attach a USB soundcard to the guest using the USB capture feature. Under OSX Yosemite / 5.0.0r1, this setup worked just fine (although there would be an occasional audio buffer underrun, but generally no more than one or two in a 2 hour audio recording window).

However, since upgrading to El Capitan and 5.0.6, I can't get the audio device to record for more than about 2 or 3 minutes before it stops sending data to the guest. The audio app appears to freeze as if there's no more audio being send from the card.

Host: OSX El Capitan (MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011) Guest: Windows XP 32-bit, single core configuration (this is a deliberately minimal setup: i restart from a snapshot every time)

I note that once a second, this log contains

USB behavior on El Capitan should be much better with VBox 5.0.14. Please open separate tickets for USB problems with VBox 5.0.14.

I just upgraded to the latest release, now I'm hearing screaming audio from my windows guest speaker. My host is OS X 10.11.3. I was on 5.0.x before where my mic was totally not working, so this fix seems to have fixed that problem, and introduced a new problem? Please advice.
