描述
I'm using a macOS 10.15.4 host with Virtualbox 6.1.6 with a Windows 7 guest. If I select a USB drive already mounted on the host to connect to the guest from the machine USB menu the drive gets suddenly disconnected without first unmounting it thus causing filesystem inconsistencies and data loss. The same thing happens with linux guests.
I'd happily attach a log but I'm afraid of losing data on my USB backup hard drive so I hope this is alright.
Thanks in advance.

hello and happy new year to you & yours. I had this exact issue - here is how I got it to work for me [ on MacBook Pro running Big Sur ].
I gotta give credit to https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/access-usb-drive-in-virtualbox-guest-os/. as that helped me out here.
- unmount your usb device(s) from your mac. but leave it connected to the Mac
- install the extension pack - https://www.smarthomebeginner.com/install-virtualbox-extension-pack-on-linux-windows/[[BR]]
- and enable USB 3 (for new USB 3 devices) in settings of virtual box [ under ports - usb ] . there you should c 3 entries for USB (1, 2 & 3)
- in that same section - look at the filters section. this is essentially telling what usb devices to start with your vm. & just choose your usb device
- then start your vm.

Sorry, I probably misspelled "without first unmounting them" to "without first mounting them", I can't edit the title now.
