32 bit windows 7 guest crashes on 64 bit windows 7 host

I've had this issue every since moving my main pc to windows 7 64 bit. Most of the time when I run a guest 32 bit windows 7 it crashes badly. I need to close vbox via the host task manager. I don't have issues with any other os I've installed including windows 7 63 bit. I've installed a windows 7 guest many times; most blow up after the install process is completed and the guest reboots. I've tried from scratch and by using the CloneVDI tool - no difference.
