On OSX, after the OS notifies applications that the battery power is low (around 10mins left), the VM sessions are automatically saved and shutdown. There does not seem to be a configuration option regarding that feature. Although I can see how this feature can be useful, I find its automatic behaviour intrusive, since there is no way for the active user to prevent that operation from happening, thereby losing control of its sessions, no matter what work (s)he is currently doing.
I think this should be configurable, by vm or for virtualbox in its entirety, in order to either not perform those shutdowns or either ask the user whether it should occur or not.

Same problem here, this behavior can be useful but can also lead to big data corruption which just happened to me: hard drive plugged on USB to the VM, moved a big file from one partition to another, VM stopped right before I plugged the charger in, 400GB lost. It's not important data, but a switch to activate or not the feature would be very appreciated !

This problem is also in the version 4.2.14. When the battery is at 4% the state of the host will save immediately.

This issue affects me too. The operation is unexpected, undocumented and works against my use cases. I would like this feature to be removed or made optional.
To add to the pain I loose port-forwards on suspend, because Cisco Any Connect VPN interferes with resuming from suspend-state and kills the connections. So I will always have to reboot all virtual-machines after they have been suspended.

Thanks for this suggestion, it will be implemented in the next 4.2.x and 4.3.x maintenance releases. Here is a 4.3.7 test build which contains the code for configuring the behavior on battery-low as well as the corresponding documentation, see chapter 9.25 in the included user manual.
Same here. Very annoying, VirtualBox just silently disappears even before the host OS itself shows "low battery" alert. I really want it to go to sleep with the host OS, not to close my VMs.
